TL;DR: Reboot turns two today! To celebrate with us and donate to our work, order a print copy of Kernel Magazine via a $30 annual subscription.

The pandemic has made time feel very mushy. It chucked all my long-term plans into a jar, shook them all up, and dumped them across the ground. Nothing has worked out when or how I expected it to. In some ways, I’ve made it to places I never dreamed of; in others, I’m still wondering why I still haven’t arrived (shoutout graduation).

Yet amid that chaos, I’ve been able to mark the passage of time by watching Reboot grow. For new readers, a quick timeline of launches:

  • Apr 2020: Zoom book talks when the world locks down

  • Sep 2020: Our first review and essay in the newsletter

  • Jan 2021: Inaugural fellowship with 20 students

  • Apr 2021: Reboot Writer Studio

  • May 2021: Discord for contributor community

  • Sep 2021: Issue One of Kernel Magazine

  • Dec 2021: Student fellowship v2, doubling in size

  • Feb 2022: Camp Reboot for new community members

We’ve gone from just me and Jessica to 50+ people who have ever volunteered, from a $1000 book-buying grant to having the support to begin compensating fellows and contributors, from Twitter DMs and Zoom chat to real-life meetups and retreats.

That’s all to say that Reboot turns two years old today, and we couldn’t be more surprised and excited and honored to be here.

If you’d like to buy us (or yourself) a little birthday gift, we’re opening one last round of orders for Kernel Magazine. Orders are open through April 16, 2021.

To get a print copy, please buy an annual subscription for $30 (originally $40). After subscribing, you’ll get an email with a form requesting your shipping info.1

Subscribe to Kernel

Kernel covers topics from activism to accessibility, from crypto to community care. There’s scifi and interviews and multimedia magic. For more, you can read editor-in-chief Jasmine Wang’s note and free digital versions of essays on the Kernel website. Narrated versions of some essays are also available for paying subscribers here.

Reboot is an independent and volunteer-run nonprofit, so this support means a lot. All funds from sales go toward future programs: printing, distribution, and compensation for Kernel Issue Two; the third round of our student fellowship; plus future projects like an opportunities newsletter and local chapters. With this expansion, we aim to build the grassroots media and educational infrastructure to redefine what success in technology means for everyone.

If you aren’t able to donate or already did, here’s one more way to help.

To get a sense of where to direct our resources, we’d love to hear more about who you are and what work you value in this short survey.

Take the survey

We’ll also give away five free print copies of Kernel to random respondents. These are super helpful, as reader surveys are how got ideas for things like the student fellowship and post archive in the first place.

Thank you again for being here. It’s meant so much to me and the Reboot team to see this community grow — to see the sheer number and diversity of people committed to co-creating a more just and abundant future.

With love and hope,

Jasmine & Reboot team

P.S. If you want to buy more than one copy of Kernel — or if you have other questions — please reach out to me directly at jasmine@joinreboot.org.
